As the celebration at the Jedi Academy winds down, Jaina
Solo finds herself troubled by the question “What are
your plans for the future?” Jacen and Anakin are to
become Luke’s apprentices, and Jaina wonders if Mara
will do the same with her. Han and Leia arrive to
present Jaina’s graduation present: a Z-95 Headhunter
specially modified by Han. Mara shows up as well, and
Jaina is stunned to see her desperately ill. Mara does
agree to take her as an apprentice despite her illness.
The young woman takes her new starfighter on a test
spin, to join her family at Mon Calamari. But on her way
out of the Yavin system, she comes upon an X-Wing coming
in the other way – an X-Wing that opens fire on her!!
The pilot of the X-Wing declares her to be in a stolen
ship, a prototype(?!?). He also seems to think he is in
the Bajic sector, and he is to prevent the Z-95’s from
entering production, something that occurred fifty years
ago. Jaina finds herself in a fierce dogfight with the
clearly insane X-Wing pilot. She senses the pilot is a
cyborg, which would probably explain the insanity.
Drawing upon Mara’s words about her lightsaber, she
uses the Force to essentially become her starfighter.
After several difficult minutes of battle, she blows up
the X-Wing. Summoning help for the ejected cyborg pilot,
she continues on to Mon Calamari where Mara presents her
with the nameplate of her new ship: the Crystal.
